La Janda Lagoon, now dried up and used for agricultural purposes, is our best resource to observe many species of birds, depending on season and weather conditions: grey heron, little egret, night heron, black stork, glossy ibis, purple gallinule, moorhen, marsh harrier, osprey, black-winged kite or kingfisher.
Since the eighteenth century many writers and travelers as Ponz, Agustín Orozco, Irby, Verner or Chapman and Buck have stated in their writings the ornithological interest of this lagoon. At present the ornithological importance of this area, declared by Birdlife International Important Bird Area in Spain (IBA No. 250), is widely recognized.
